I am happy to announce that

available on our web site at www.iacrao.org.
This is one conference you won’t want to miss. Dusty Dale Wolf, BB Boyd
Bradshaw and the program committee have dusted off the plates at the
Collinsville Park and report that it’s in excellent playing condition. Their
program will feature top-notch talent, fireworks and a special souvenir that
all IACRAO fans will treasure.
You deserve a break from your day-to-day grind. Why not join our fans for a G-R-E-A-T Three-Day Series, October 22-24, 2003 in Collinsville. You have an open invitation to my skybox to enjoy and experience post-game refreshments and camaraderie.
See you at the park!
IACRAO Conference Comes South!
From Julie Jobryce
Southern District Chair
Greenville College
Greetings from the Deep South... Deep in Southern Illinois that is! No vast plantations or grits here, but still ready to show you a little southern hospitality as you head down for the IACRAO Conference in October. We hope that you will make it a priority to come our way and enjoy the beauty of changing seasons during the harvest time of year. I trust that no matter where you are coming from, you will find the drive a beautiful one! I still have fond memories of driving along the Illinois River and feasting my eyes on the beautiful colors that come as the leaves begin to change. Huge combine tractors work their way through golden fields; the scent of fresh cut hay fills the air, as does the laughter of youth out on evening hayrides; orange pumpkins accent the landscape... What beautiful sites. Autumn truly is one of the best times for a trip down south!
Not into the “country life?” Perhaps we can entice you by offering the attractions of big city life in St. Louis, Missouri, located just across the river. Shoppers can check out Union Station. Sports fans can check out the Cardinals or the Rams... (Oops! No Cubs and Bears down here, sorry.) There are plenty of sites to see: science and art museums, the zoo, riverboat excursions, theatre, etc. So, why not come for the conference and stay for the weekend? (Just don’t try to charge the extra days to your business expenses!)
OK, perhaps I’m beginning to sound like I work for the tourist council. In truth, I simply want to encourage you to make an effort to come to this year’s conference, even though the road here may seem long. The speakers and sessions that have been put together for you will definitely make the trip worthwhile. Don’t miss this great opportunity to network with your colleagues and see what’s new in the business. Looking forward to seeing you here!

This year at the conference we're including an opportunity for seasoned veterans (five years or more experience) to share your words of wisdom with our rookies. Here's the plan. We'd like to assign you to contact a newcomer before the conference to answer any questions they may have. Then hook up with them in person Wednesday, October 22, at the new member orientation. And, since we know you have some great locker room stories to share, we've added a session for you to do just that.
Interested? Please contact me at bross@mail.millikin.edu. Come on. Give a rookie a break. You'll be glad you did, and so will they!
Batter Up!

Our fall season (conference) is quickly approaching. We know you've been training for this, and it's your turn at bat. Kathleen Benz and Mary Betts from Quincy College have already made it on base with no outs. Why not join them and load the bases! They are the first to volunteer to carpool to the conference. They are looking for people from west central Illinois to travel with. Way to go, ladies!
If you need a ride or would like to carpool, please contact me at bross@mail.millikin.edu. We'll make sure you have fun en route and at the conference. Let me know if you'd like to share a room to cut down on expenses as well.

According to the University of Michigan, passwords are like underwear. A good password is key to network security. But how do you get your users to remember and adopt a few basic principles of password security?
Recently, the University of Michigan developed a password security educational program that has been well received by students, faculty, and staff. The campaign consists of five colorful, eye-catching posters featuring “Zeke,” the creation of well-known cartoonist Harley Schwadron. The creation of a good password is based on the premise that passwords are like underwear: you should change them often; you should not share them with your friends; you should not leave them laying around; the longer, the better; and they should be mysterious (University of Michigan website, http://www.itd.umich.edu/education/news/posters.html)

Office of the University Registrar
Illinois State University

On December 31, 2003, Illinois State University will be losing one of her key cornerstones, the University Registrar, Dr. Carolyn Z. Bartlett. An Illinois State University alumna, Dr. Bartlett has worked in the admissions and registration offices since the 1970’s. During the past 30+ years, she has seen the university go from IBM punch card registration and hand processed graduation audits to on-line registration, audits, information access and other services. Most recently, she has overseen the implementation of two new general education programs for undergraduates, the moving of the Office of the University Registrar into the newly remodeled Moulton Hall, the creation of the Student Service and Referral Center, and on-line service upgrades for ISU students [iCampus portal].
Being an administrator who is very accessible, knowledgeable and positive minded, Dr. Bartlett is a strong believer in good customer service, whether the customer is a student, a parent, a faculty member or fellow co-worker. A stickler for the details, she has taken her organizational skills and commitment to quality beyond ISU’s campus to other organizations including IACRAO, serving as their President in 1990. Her petite feet will leave some very big shoes to fill at Illinois State in 2004. She will be greatly missed. Best wishes in your retirement, Dr. B!

Increased military activity over the last year or so has also resulted in an increased number of Veterans who are interested in using their GI Bill and other military benefits to pursue a college education. If you are interested in learning more about how your institution can work with Veterans to help them get the most of their well-earned education, you are encouraged to attend the session on Military Credit Evaluation and Veteran’s Benefits at this year’s IACRAO Conference.
Joan Ryan, Administrator for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs State Approving Agency (SAA) for Veterans’ Education, will be among the presenters at the conference. She will discuss the evaluation of military credits. In addition, Ms. Ryan will discuss the role that the records and registrars offices play in assuring SAA compliancy and the potential impact on admissions for institutions that struggle with compliancy. This session should prove to be very informative for both registrar and admissions offices.
Proposed Changes to the Illinois Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers By-Laws
At the December 6, 2002 Executive Board Meeting, two motions were approved by the Executive Board members to amend the existing Illinois Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers By-Laws. As prescribed by the By-Laws, any change must be disseminated to the membership within 30 days prior to calling for a vote. The following changes, highlighted in strikeout and bold, will be placed before the IACRAO membership for a vote at the annual business meeting held during the October 22-24, 2003 conference.

the membership for each individual who participates as an affiliate member.

IACRAO Archivist
Several months ago, I delivered another box of IACRAO materials to our archive collection at the University of Illinois Library in Urbana. These records will be catalogued into our historical records.
Now it is time for your archivist to review our records to determine the years where there is a void in our collection. I will notify our membership of the missing years to urge members to search for IACRAO programs, Chronicles, correspondence, etc., to fill in the gaps.
An
example of filling in the gaps occurred just a few weeks ago. I was pleased to
receive from Marilyn Gerken Benakis, Registrar at Dominican University, two
large manila envelopes with IACRAO records from the late 70’s and 80’s. This
material provided records for years in which we did not have in our archives!
In my report at the upcoming fall conference, I will relate the final “chapter,” the years 1933 to 1936, from our historical sketch of the Association’s earliest years, and perhaps, another story from our National Journals.

No, it's not Wheaties. It's an opportunity for people of color to share breakfast and discuss pertinent topics at this year's conference. Consider it an early morning think tank. Join us bright and early, Thursday, October 23, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and brain storming. How does the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action in the college selection process affect you and your institution? How can people of color advance in the higher education workplace? "Is anyone else out there doing twice the work for half the pay, besides me?" "Help! I'm the only _____ in my department." These are just a few topics to get you thinking. Bring others from your institution. We'll start the discussions at breakfast and continue that evening at the Special Interest Session.
Not an early riser. We'll give you a wake up call. Questions? Contact me at bross@mail.millikin.edu.
East Central District

On March 23, 2003, approximately twenty-four members of the East Central District met at Danville Area Community College (DACC) in their newly remodeled conference suite for our annual Spring Meeting and Workshop. Although our numbers were decimated by budgetary cutbacks, our spirits were not. We began the day with informal discussion sessions designed for sharing new ideas and helping each other tackle common problems. Although our theme was focusing on technology, sessions also covered problems in admissions, recordkeeping, budget tightening, transfers, and retirements.
After the sessions, we gathered as a whole for a wonderful lunch provided by DACC and the spring business meeting. Dale Wolf, IACRAO President-Elect, gave us an update on the coming fall conference. Recorders from the twelve sessions gave a brief summary of their discussions and various district items were discussed.
