Pre-Season IACRAO Conference Update
Remember, the annual IACRAO conference “season” opens in Collinsville on October 22, 2003. The leadoff hitter (keynote) will be Dr. Connie Fuller, co-author of “Creating Authentic Teams for High Performance.” We expect her to start a big inning, and we will not stop until we have “batted around” through Friday, October 24.
It’s not too early to make reservations with the Holiday Inn “box office.” Call 618/345-2800 and tell them you want to be a part of the IACRAO team! If you will be looking for rides, carpools, roommates, etc., send your email to Brenda Ross (bross@mail.millikin.edu) and let her know of your interest.
Continue to watch the website (www.iacrao.org) for periodic updates and feel free to contact Owner Russ Fahrner at rfahrner@elgin.edu or General Manager Dale Wolf at cfdww@eiu.edu for more information.
7th Inning Stretch
From Brenda Ross
IACRAO EEO Officer
Preparations for the IACRAO World Series (that's the 81st Annual Conference) are underway. The field is set. It's the Collinsville, IL Holiday Inn. Mark your calendars for October 22 to 24, and dust off your uniform. We just might need you in the later innings.
We're in the 7th inning stretch of planning and we need your help. We're looking for a few (actually several) good sports willing to carpool and share a hotel room with those who want to attend, but their institutions can't afford the fare. You could be just the relief pitcher we're looking for. We know how lonely long car trips can be. So, why not fill up your vehicle with some friendly, eager team members who need a ride? And no one wants to stare at four walls even in a beautiful hotel like the Holiday Inn. You need a roommate, right? Think back to those wacky college days with your roommate (well, let's not get that wacky). Relive some of those moments for a couple of days.
Come on. Get in the game. Contact me at bross@mail.millikin.edu and volunteer to arrange a carpool and/or share your room.
Okay, just one more favor. It's for the team. We need seasoned veterans to serve as mentors to our rookies this year. We'd like to give you a few names to contact to provide a little coaxing and details about the conference. Then plan to meet your rookies when they arrive and take them under your wing until they feel comfortable with the lineup. We know you're dying to share years of IACRAO experience with our greener members. Here's your chance. It's easy. Simply drop me a line at bross@mail.millikin.edu and let me know you'll make the ultimate sacrifice for the team. Write "sacrifice fly" on the subject line.
Batter up! Are you gonna swing or draw a walk? (Translation: volunteer, please.) I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Catch
a Bright Idea!
The Fall 2003 Annual Meeting is your chance to share your “bright idea” with your colleagues. The Gene Magac Bright Ideas award program was created to recognize the high degree of motivation and inventiveness present among IACRAOins. We want to hear about any new concepts, plans, or novel ways of serving students, faculty, and staff. No proposal is too small or too big to be considered! Remember that finalists will be asked to give a brief presentation at the Bright Ideas session of the conference. The final winner will receive a complimentary registration for the 2004 Annual meeting.
Send your entry as soon as possible! So as you’re rounding home base, take time to write down a brief description of your plan, program, etc., and send it to me at jopicker@noctrl.edu, fax 630-637-5608, or mail to Jonathan Pickering, North Central College, PO Box 3063, Naperville, IL 60566.
Batter Up to an AACRAO Leadership Position!
The AACRAO Nominations and Elections Committee invites you to nominate yourself or a colleague for an AACRAO leadership position. Your participation is very important. To nominate, go to http://www.aacrao.org/nominations/ or download the form from http://www.aacrao.org/about/nomination.pdf.

The workshop was held at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on Friday, March 7, 2003 with 75 in attendance. The facilities were wonderful and the day would not have been successful without the great efforts of the staff at Oakton, including Bruce Oates, Carol DiCola and Terri Quam. Alice Blomquist’s assistance and direction was invaluable and Gwen Kanelos was very helpful with getting IACRAO folders for the event.
After registration and coffee, Michael Maysilles welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker, Morris Taylor, owner and President of Talisman Training Associates. His interactive presentation, “Diversity in the Workplace,” was fun, informative and very pertinent to the issues that we, as professionals in higher education, face each day. His overall objectives were to: 1.) emphasize the importance of building greater understanding and awareness of diversity issues as a foundation for skill building; 2.) provide a variety of learning activities, utilizing both small and large group interaction, so that everyone can participate in a way that is consistent with their learning style; 3.) recognize how common experiences and ways of communicating can be perceived differently; and 4.) recognize that everyone has a role and responsibility for creating and environment that embraces diversity. Mr. Taylor’s program was very well received and presented in such a way that it had a positive effect on the attendee’s. It was believed that the attendees would have listened and participated for much longer than the allotted time. Mr. Taylor is a recommended speaker for his presentations on diversity for your future functions.
“Birds of a Feather” sessions were then held in the areas of Community College Admissions, Community College Records/Registration, Four-Year College/University Admissions, and Four-Year College/University Records/Registration. A buffet style lunch was then served.
Northwest District
Although we were hit with a lovely spring downpour, approximately fifty people, representing five institutions were in attendance on Friday, April 4. Waubonsee Community College hostesses, Debbie Conlee, Patty Knowles, and Faith LaShure greeted their soggy guests and checked them in. A continental breakfast awaited them, while they chatted and found their seats.
The Dean of Students, Melinda James, welcomed the group to Waubonsee. Presenter, Ron Partch, kept the group captivated by his “Thinking Outside the Bag,” activities and presentation.
The group enjoyed a lively session of idea sharing as Kelly Sinclair, of Elgin Community College, and Faith LaShure, of Waubonsee Community College, helped facilitate the round table discussion. Staff from all institutions enjoyed sharing common concerns and possible solutions for common issues they encounter on a daily basis.
At noon the group broke for a lunch of sandwiches that people could “build up” with a variety of toppings and condiments. Everyone seemed to have a good time! Thanks to all who provided the many door prizes.
Southern District
The newly remodeled RendLake Resort was a terrific location for this year’s Southern District Meeting, held on March 28, 2003. Our speaker was Alan Shiller from the Department of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Mr. Shiller quickly had all fifty-five attendees involved in his interactive presentation, “The Nonverbal Agenda.” The one-hour presentation was followed by small Birds-of-a-Feather discussion groups. We closed the meeting with a wonderful luncheon and lots of door prizes. The meeting was informative and refreshing. A big thanks goes to Phyllis Werner for her outstanding work in planning this wonderful event!
West Central District
The meeting was great! It was held Wednesday, March 12 at Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing in Quincy, IL. About 40 attended the meeting. The theme of the day was a time to de-stress. Sheila Capp, MSN, RN, presented a session about wearing many hats and the stress that happens entitled, “The Hat Trick.” Dr. Margie Williams, DNSc, RN, presented a session on nutrition and stress, “Who You Are By What You Eat.” Another highlight of the day was the lunch cooking demonstration with Chef Bob Gammon who made chicken Caesar salads to order. I think everyone enjoyed themselves!
